Professor (Mrs.) Ngozi Nnam is the President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria. This very charming and intelligent woman is a Professor of Public Health Nutrition and one of the most respected in her field of knowledge both in Nigeria and other parts of the world. She is also a visiting Professor to the Department of home Science (Nutrition and Dietetics) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Enugu State—South Eastern Nigeria) She was the Special guest of honor and Chief Launcher at the launching of the new PEAK 4-5-6 brand by diary giant, FrieslandCampina WAMCO in Lagos on Wednesday June 15, 2016. The erudite professor of nutrition science opened up to your Africa’s number 1 Celebrity Encounter blog, Asabeafrika at the event which held at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki; Lagos-South West Nigeria. Hear what she told us about quality nutrient and the Nigerian child. Enjoy.

Ma, how do you feel with the launching of the PEAK 4-5-6 to the Nigerian market?
I think it is a clever way of intervening to address the issue of malnutrition in Nigeria. A close look at the milk shows that it contains a lot of nutrients that are good for growth and development, especially for that period, 4, 5 to 6 years. It contains a lot of iron and DHA which is very essential for brain development. It might interest us to know that from conception through the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth years of a child, the child is still growing and the brain is developing. And this important nutrient DHA is very essential for adequate development of the brain so that the child will grow and actualize his or her potentials in life and contribute meaningfully to national development.  So, I think it is a very great development to introduce a milk brand that is specific for that age group to meet their specific nutrition requirement.

“What we are doing is serious advocacy and enlightenment campaign to let mothers understand what they should be giving to their children so that their children will be in a state of good nutritional status and be able to thrive through that critical period in life”

What is your organization, Nutrition Society of Nigeria doing to create awareness for Nigerian mothers on the need for basic milk nutrition for kids in their first 1000 days on earth?
We have already started. What we are doing is serious advocacy and enlightenment campaign to let mothers understand what they should be giving to their children so that their children will be in a state of good nutritional status and be able to thrive through that critical period in life. So, it is all about enlightenment and advocacy. Like what has happened today (The Launchings of PEAK 4-5-6 and Peak Health Forum) I know that many mothers have learnt the importance of adequate nutrition and the importance of nutrient at this critical period of time and the sources of this nutrient of which each one of them is produced with this brand new PEAK 4-5-6 milk brand for that age group.

On a last note and as one of the special guest of honor, can you give your word to FrieslandCampina for the initiative to produce PEAK 4-5-6?
I sincerely commend them (FrieslandCampina) for the introduction of a milk brand that has been formulated to provide the nutrient requirement of children between ages of 4 to 6. And I encourage them to do more mothers so that they could bring up children that are well nourished.
