Gbenga Dan Asabe of Asabeafrika with Mr. Godwyn Akabogu aka American Bobo
Meeting Godwyn Akabogu was a miracle. I never taught I could have an attention with this Pennsylvania, United State of America based International business man and politician until a close mother figure in Nigeria advised me to meet him at a 3 star hotel where he took residence during his short holiday to Nigeria. I got the first call from him on Monday May 2nd (2016) which was a Public Holiday in Nigeria, giving me an instant appointment to meet him at his hotel suite “Gbenga, I will like to speak with you over certain issues in my state. I learnt you are a blogger” he confirmed on phone. But other pressing issues of the day denied me the opportunity to meet him.  The next day, I got a call from his wife in Pennsylvania. She has been a close family friend of over 15 years but I never knew the man calling me was her husband. She used to have a pretty daughter attending Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State until few years ago when she relocated with her kids to join her husband at the United States of America. She subtly ordered me to meet the man “He is my husband and he has something to tell you. Feel free to meet him” she urged me with an enthusiastic charm that can be felt on the phone. An hour later I was in his hotel lobby but he was out. I put a call to his mobile phone and he returned under ten minutes. He quickly led me to his room in company of a friend, Jolly Obozuwa (A former Editor with Concord Newspaper).

After a little merriment, he sauntered into a long discussion which centered on his background as an old foot soldier of Owele Anayo Rochas Okorocha the Igbo philanthropist who later became Governor of Imo State (South-East Nigeria) He told me so many good, great and glitter things about the Owele’s Political vision for the Igbos and Nigeria. However, Akabogu who is famously known as “American Bobo” suddenly became angry. He showed it in is narration. Akabogu who recently took a tour of Imo, his state of birth during his one month stay in Nigeria is very angry that his kinsmen are not grateful to Owele Anayo Rochas Okorocha for his constant reforms. It was at this junction I discovered that Godwyn Akabogu has series of issues burning under his belly. We later took him on at the Swimming Side of the 3 star hotel and he revealed so many secrets you will never find anywhere about Anayo Rochas Okorocha. He indeed, had a story to tell about the political journey of a man he claims to be his political mentor. His decision which is born out of the need ‘to say the truth and die’ showed a great deal of the American streak in this Nkwere, Imo State born business man. Godwyn Akabogu to Asabbeafrika to Asabeafrika...'Rochas Okorocha had to go for close family after he was roundly disappointed by others'
Tell us about your humble self and what are you doing in Nigeria?
Yes, my full names are Godwyn Akabogu aka “American Bobo”. I live in the United States of America (Pennsylvania). I have been away for more than 13 years running right now. I have been coming and going out of Nigeria for a very long time. But I have not had the opportunity of really spending time in my village and taking time actually to go round the state (Imo State). But when I came in this time, in April, because of the project I am handling back at home, I spent four good solid weeks in my own village, Nkwere in Nkwere LGA, that is where I come from and that afforded me the opportunity of traveling the length and breadth of Imo State and I discovered the incumbent governor of the state has done so many new things for that state.
“I can describe Anayo Rochas Okorocha in my own way as a lion with four AK-47 guns; two in the front and two at the back.  I hope you know what a lion is? When you see a lion, you will not stand in its way. Not to talk of a lion with four AK-47 guns”.

Tell us more about your relationship with the Imo State Governor?
Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha (smiles before speaking further) has been a great leader. I met him about sixteen years ago. I came in contact with him during his tribulation at the National Assembly. I was attracted to him because of the kind of political message he had for the Ibo man. I equally appreciate his mission for the Igbos as well. During that period I was equally vying for the chairmanship slot of my Local Government Area that is Nkwere LGA. I got involved with him during the time he had People’s Movement which was his own political umbrella, political structure and political platform that took him to stardom. We were managing all these things together but when he started flying the national flag of going for presidency that was when I absconded because I was very interested in going for my Local Government Area and the state in particular. That was where we parted ways; but the little knowledge of politics that I have today, I can tell you, I learnt from Rochas Anayo Okorocha’s political school. So, for those of them who actually know who Rochas is, it is easy for you to say ‘Rochas is my friend, Rochas is my this and that’ but if you want to be Rochas, you must be Rochas by heart not just Rochas by mouth. You should be able to go through his political tutelage for you to actually understand who Rochas Anayo Okorocha is.
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'I got my Political tutelage from the loyus feet of Owele Rochas Okorocha'
The man, Owele Rochas Okorocha by Godwyn Akabogu…
So, who is Owele Rochas Anayo Okorocha?
I can describe Anayo Rochas Okorocha in my own way as a lion with four AK-47 guns; two in the front and two at the back.  I hope you know what a lion is? When you see a lion, you will not stand in its way. Not to talk of a lion with four AK-47 guns.   Rochas is unbeatable if you really get to know who he is, he is a grass root man, he is a philanthropist he is more than what people think he is. I repeat, he is more than what people think he is but you need to get closer for you to understand who Rochas Okorocha is.
“My son, my son, the more I see you grow up the more I go down because I have seen somebody that will take the mantle of leadership from me and take it across the country”
Orji Uzor Kalu
But majority of Nigerians are beginning to think that Rochas Okorocha is too ambitious. Some think he wants to become the leader of the Igbo race while others think he want to be a leader of Nigeria, which one do you think is his ambition?
You see, people don’t even understand who he is; to start with, my people, Imo state people, I will tell you without missing words that they are wicked and unfair to Rochas Okorocha’s administration. To what he has done in Imo today, they are unfair to him.
How do you mean, did you notice anything bad about his image?
Yes I did. You see, for the first time, I challenge every Imo sons and daughter; let that person come out and show me, since the inception of Imo state, a singular government that has outperformed Rochas Anayo Okorocha in four years.
Are you saying people like Achike Udenwa who brought Mr. Biggs to Owerri and Ikedi Ohakim didn’t do anything for the state?
See, all those people you just mentioned did their own quota but whatever thing they did is nowhere to be compared with what Anayo Okorocha has done for the past four years. What Achike Udenwa did in 8 years, Rochas Anayo Okorocha surpassed it in four years.
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'Imo Contractors cheat their governor on contracts awarded to them'
But a lot of people say Rochas is not working but just on a political hoodwinking?
No, those who feel that Rochas is not working are charlatans. I can stay here and tell you authoritatively that Rochas Anayo Okorocha has performed tremendously well.
Rochas is the anointed Igbo Leader…
So, why are his works not been laundered properly, why do people think he is more of a political gambler?
No, he is not about political gambling. For the past one month I have travelled the length and breadth of Imo State, the projects Okorocha has done speaks for itself. You will see all the projects Okorocha achieved and you will discover that all these things speak for themselves. Are you talking about roads? Are you talking about the schools he renovated, I mean, where would you start to access him? Then, cast your mind back to the previous administrations, what do they have to show for their governance? Both Ikedi Ohakim and Achike Udenwa even Sam Mbakwe. And my pain is this; what the Igbo sons and daughters do not understand is that, Rochas is the anointed son of the late Ikemba Ojukwu.
I refuse to believe you on that note, how do you say Okorocha is Ojukwu’s anointed son when in actual fact, Ojukwu seems to have blessed Peter Obi of Anambra in his last hour on earth?
Peter Obi is a later arrangement.
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'Imo People are very ungrateful to Owele Rochas Okorocha'
Can you explain better, sir?
I will give you a story. Far back in the year 2000 that was in Rochas Okorocha’s home in Abuja, I have been away for some time, I can’t remember the street we have that property again. But the story is there; during that meeting, there was Sam Mbakwe, there was Ezeife, there was Ojelu Igbo Ozi and there was Dim Chukwemeka Ojukwu in attendance. Then you have the errand boys that were serving him then, people like myself, people like the present Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu, people like Ogueri Nwerem, people like Shyna Iwuanyawu, people like Ideato Okolie…all these guys were in this meeting. And then, after Owelle Rochas Okorocha finished addressing these Igbo leaders inside his living room, Ojukwu said “My son, my son, after listening to your speech, I now realized I shouldn’t have gone to war”
What did Ojukwu mean by that statement?
Ojukwu said instead of war-war we would have jaw-jaw. Ojukwu said instead of us going to war after his people were challenged, that he would have negotiated the problems of the Igbos and the Nigerians on a round table discussion.
You mean Ojukwu was referring to Anayo Rochas Okorocha as a more visionary leader than himself?
Exactly; he didn’t stop there, the Abuja meeting was the first encounter and I was there with all the personalities I mentioned. Some of them are still alive. They are still well alive and healthy.
“They are wicked and they are unfair to Anayo Rochas Okorocha. This is a man who gave them free education; he gave them different kinds of infrastructural development, roads and lot of transformation. I saw this myself; it is not like hearsay”
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'Ojukwu confirmed before his death that Owele Anayo Rochas Okorocha is the next leader of the Igbo race'
How Ojukwu anointed Rochas Okorocha…
What did Owele said that made Ojukwu to confirm on him such a benevolence statement of appreciation?
He took Ojukwu down the memory lane and explained to him how it is easier to be a bridge between the east, the west and the north without going to war. He gave him an analytic precedent on how the Igbos could have consolidated their genius without fighting a war and that made Ojukwu to acknowledge that, the young man was superior in intellectual prowess. However, the most inspiring one, which is the second encounter between Ojukwu and Owele Rochas Okorocha is the one which crowned it up and told us why Okorocha is the anointed and ordained Igbo leader of the Igbos. It was Ojukwu himself that said it, I will never cook such a sublime story up, the pictures are there; the people who covered that event at Aspanda in Lagos in 2001 are still alive. That is after the Abuja meeting. This meeting at Aspanda was convened by Eze Ndigbo of Lagos, Chief Ohazulike. At that meeting, Ojukwu and some other prominent Igbo leaders were there. Anayo Rochas Okorocha was there. It was Anayo Rochas Okorocha that introduced Ojukwu to the podium after giving an inspiring speech. After that inspiring speech, Ojukwu took the microphone, turned and looked at him; he said “My son, my son, the more I see you grow up, the more I go down”
Late Odumegwu Ojukwu
You mean Nkemba Nnewi said that to Owelle Rochas Okorocha?
I repeat, Ojukwu said, ‘My son, my son, the more I see you grow up, the more I go down’. Do you know the irony of the whole thing? The Bible says “The power of death and life is in the tongue and those that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverb 18 verse 21). Ojukwu made those prophetic utterances and lo and behold, by the year 2011, Rochas became the Governor of Imo state and by the following year, Ikemba died. What do you call that? “My son, my son, the more I see you grow up the more I go down because I have seen somebody that will take the mantle of leadership from me and take it across the country” that was the anointed moment. That was the inspiring moment. He spoke it and the heavens consolidated it and when this man took the mantle of leadership in Imo State, Ojukwu went to rest. So, I can authoritatively tell you today that Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha is the anointed son and the leader for the new dream. He may not remember all these other things I am saying here. Ever since he became the Governor of Imo State, I have not sighted him, I have not been to him I have not done anything with him.
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'Rochas Okorocha is a Lion with 4 Ak-47 across his back and front'
You mean Ojukwu anointed Rochas Okorocha and not Peter Obi like many people taught?  Peter Obi was seen to have catered for Ojukwu even up to the grave during his dying moment
You know what? He (Peter Obi) can afford to do all that because he rode on Ojukwu’s back. Peter Obi became the Governor on the back of Ikemba Nnewi. Hitherto, before that time, nobody knows who Peter Obi was. So, he rose on Ikemba’s back. But Ikemba, being a political juggernaut that he is, he knew who will take the Ibos to the Promised Land and all the statements I just mentioned to you now are subject to verification. The people that recorded the video of the event at Aspanda are alive and they can produce that video. Anayo Rochas Okorocha himself might not even remember all these statements, he may not remember all these other things I am tracing their history right now. But the history is there to speak for itself; they will listen to Ikemba’s speech himself at Aspanda because all those things were noted.
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'Rochas Okorocha opened our eyes to so many things'
Imo People are wicked
So, why did you say Imo People are a wicked lot?
They are wicked and they are unfair to Anayo Rochas Okorocha. This is a man who gave them free education; he gave them different kinds of infrastructural development, roads and lot of transformation. I saw this myself; it is not like hearsay. At the end of the day, why won’t you give honor to he whom honor is due? Why don’t you give credit to whom credit is due? There is a saying in my local dialect, it says “Ekele Onye akidi na ke ogworo, ya gwota kwa ozo” which means “when you thank the person that prepared green beans for you, he would be energized to prepare another dish for you”. At Imo State what are they saying? Their slogan is this “Government of the family, by the family and for the family”
So, why did they tag Owele with such a bad nomenclature? Do you think they are wrong?
Absolutely wrong; you know why? Because this is a man that comes with good intention, he will show them his inner hand but they will show him their back hand. You know how they do it?
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'The Ibos must learn how to give honor to whom honor is due'
I don’t know.
When they are seeking for contract, for job from the government, they will come on a 3D format to show him the vision; ‘sir, this is what we think will be good for Imo State’ and stuff like that and the man, being a person who wants the best for his state, he will now buy the idea and say ‘ok, come and do this for my state, do it for my people’ and lo and behold, the contract is given out, signed and sealed. Then, when it is time to perform the contract, they now do abracadabra. They will give him what he never bargained for; not one time, not two times, not three times. it is like the more you look, the less you see and when you ask them, you know what they say, that ‘he thinks he knows too much and when he thinks he knows too much, this is the best way for us to handle him’.
Godwyn Akabogu to Asabeafrika...'Those condemning Rochas Okorocha are only cursing themselves'
Don’t you think that is the black man syndrome, beyond the evil of Imo people?
Well, you see, it supposed not be that way. When you present something, from the society where I am coming from (America), if you say it is white, it is going to remain white. Till thy kingdom come, the records are there to speak for themselves. When you now present white and then bring black, it becomes fraud. And when this guy (Rochas), they disappointed him roundly, he now resulted to using close associates and family members he could trust and that is where they tagged him a “Government of the family by the family and for the family”. Because there is no other person he can fall back to, there is no other person he can rely on. So, we need to call a spade a spade and lay it bare the way it is.
Do you think Rochas Okorocha is a good leader? Some see him as President of the Igbo nation but he seems to see himself as a national leader. Do you think he is one?
See, I don’t know the dream he has right now, but what I can tell you is this, if not Rochas Anayo Okorocha for President from the Igbo land, who else?
Mr. Godwyn Akabogu
But we have the likes of Orji Uzor Kalu and even Peter Obi?
We can have all these people but who has what it takes to be able to lead across the divide? That is what we have to consider. Even before he became Governor, he has deepened himself in several philanthropically benevolent acts across the Niger; he was a giver and a repairer of destiny. A visioneer, a dreamer, and that was why Ojukwu said if he had known, he wouldn’t have gone to war with Nigeria to register the grief of the Igbo man. Listen, I have had the opportunity of working with Senator Hope Uzodinma, I had the opportunity of working with the political camp of Honorable Emeka Ihedioha, I had the opportunity of working with the political camp of Senator Ifeanyi Ararume and even with the political camp of Martins Agbaso, I can authoritatively tell you right here, with all these political gladiators from Imo state, none of them can be compared to Rochas Anayo Okorocha in terms of every other things put together. In all ramifications, they are no match, they are no equal. So, none of them has what it takes to be able to take the Igbos to the promised land, to even take Imo State to a higher land. I can authoritatively tell you that. So, it is better we start now, to give honor to whom honor is due and then begin to give praise to whom praise is do. And then, what the Imo people don’t understand is that the more they curse Rochas Okorocha, the more they attract curses to the state. I am a born again Christian, it is a situation of ‘Touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm’. The Imo people have to be warned. They must be warned. They should handle Anayo Rochas Okorocha with care. With every amount of care; that is an anointed and ordained son. So, everybody should be careful the way he utters his or her words towards that our jewel.
Are you saying Anayo Rochas Okorocha is the last Prophet after Chukwuemeka Ojukwu?
He cannot be the last but he is one of the promising vessels, the most prominent promising vessel that can link Igbos to the rest of the country.
