ICCON Recognizes PZ Cussons for Supporting the Learning of Chemistry in Nigeria

The Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON) has presented a merit award to PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc for promoting the study and learning of Chemistry in Nigeria. The award was presented to the company at an award ceremony held recently in Lagos.
The ICCON, established by Decree 91 of 1993 is statutorily charged with the responsibility of regulating the teaching and practice of chemistry profession in Nigeria.  The body is a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health with the vision “to recreate situations that will impact positively on the nation, while providing professional protection to members”.

Speaking at the ceremony,Head Corporate Service, Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, Mrs. Rita Michael-Ojo, noted that, as endorsers of the PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge, it is only right to recognize the company’s support for Chemistry as both a subject and a profession.
Her words that, ‘as a body saddled with responsibility to put in place regulatory framework for the practice of chemistry, we have monitored PZ Cussons activities around the profession and it has become clear that the company from all its activities has been in the forefront of bringing to the consciousness of Nigerians the importance of chemistry to our everyday life’. ‘It is not out of place to support and recognize such a company, while urging other organizations to emulate the gesture of PZ Cussons’.
In response to the award,Executive Director Corporate Affairs, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc,Mrs Yomi Ifaturoti stated that ICCON has supported PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge for 3 years running and are committed to giving the competition the needed backing.

Ifaturoti further explained the award is a way to encourage us to do more, as we focus on creating awareness for the important role chemistry plays in our everyday life. She said the company decided to focus on the subject because “chemistry is everywhere;   the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, are all functions of Chemistry.”
She regretted that many youths nowadays are moving away from sciences and going to art subjects because they think science is difficult, saying that when students are afraid of a particular subject, the task falls on the teacher and all concerned stakeholders to join hands to find exciting ways of teaching the subject.
Launched in 2007, PZ Cussons Nigeria Foundation has been helping Nigerian communities by supporting projects in the areas of roads, and other infrastructural improvements like water, sanitation, health and education. The Foundation has completed over 50 projects in different parts Nigeria.
